Bear River Massacre Commemoration

What an amazing opportunity to share the Bear River Massacre Memorial with a larger audience this year because of the recording that will be happening. We hope that teachers will use this experience to teach about the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation more in depth in preparation and as a follow up to the memorial service as well as the separate DUP plaque unveiling ceremony. Doing some preparatory work before viewing the commemoration would be ideal.


Secondary students could prepare to watch and understand the memorial by participating in Jeff Nokes lesson plan. This would build background, or if done after the ceremony is shown, add depth to the experience.

For elementary students, any of the lessons developed in collaboration with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation would also build background and add depth to viewing the memorial service. The following are the published Northwestern Shoshone lessons:

Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts lesson by Rachel Gonthier

· Learn about the history and culture of the Northwestern Shoshone people.

· Paint a watercolor landscape of an environment with Utah wildlife.

English Language Arts, Music, Social Studies lesson by Emily Soderborg

· Compare and contrast two songs.

· Identify Utah’s three main geographic regions.

· Learn about the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation.

English Language Arts, Music, Social Studies lesson by Emily Soderborg

· Sing a Northwestern Shoshone song.

· Write a narrative story about an experience in nature.

· Create music compositions patterned after the song.


Drama, English Language Arts, Health, Social Studies lesson by Lisa Bean and Emily Soderborg

· Learn about Northwestern Shoshone storytelling.

· Participate in a reader’s theatre based on a Northwestern Shoshone tale.

· Connect the story to social and emotional skills.

English Language Arts, Social Studies, Music lesson by Emily Soderborg

· Conduct songs in different meters.

· Research and present about historical songs with connections to the Transcontinental Railroad.

· Compare and contrast cultural groups impacted by the railroad.

Media Arts, Social Studies, Visual Arts lesson by Rachel Gonthier

· Compare and contrast images that reflect 19th-century westward expansion.

· Photograph portraits that reflect the real and ideal.
